Where Knife Mastery Meets Sword Scale
At 23 inches overall with an 18 inch D2 steel blade, this handcrafted hunting sword occupies a category all its own. Too long to be called a knife, too purposeful to be called decorative. This is a serious large blade built for hunters who need reach and cutting power that a standard hunting knife simply cannot provide, and for collectors who want a centrepiece piece that commands attention on any wall or display.
The Blade — Clip Point with Curved Belly
This blade combines two of the most capable design elements in large blade making:
Clip point geometry — the concave curve cut into the spine near the tip creates a sharp, fine, highly controllable point with outstanding piercing capability. At 18 inches the clip point tip gives you precision that you would not expect from a blade this size, useful for detail work during field dressing even on a large blade.
Curved cutting belly — the cutting edge carries a pronounced arc along its length that makes this blade exceptional for the sweeping, pulling cuts that hunters rely on during skinning and field dressing:
- The curve concentrates cutting force along a smaller contact area for cleaner, more efficient slices
- Sweeping strokes through hide and connective tissue require less effort than straight blade push cuts
- The belly naturally guides the blade along the contours of a carcass — reducing fatigue during extended processing sessions
- Long curved cuts for quartering, deboning, and trimming large game are faster and cleaner than any straight blade can manage
At 18 inches this blade also delivers genuine reach for camp tasks, clearing brush, processing firewood and heavy outdoor work where a shorter blade would struggle.
The Steel — D2 at Sword Scale
Putting D2 tool steel into an 18 inch blade is a deliberate choice. Most large blades compromise on steel quality, using softer, cheaper steel to keep production costs manageable at this size. We do not.
D2 at 58–62 HRC hardness on an 18 inch blade delivers:
- Edge retention that holds through complete large game processing without dulling
- Wear resistance that keeps both the curved belly and the clip point tip sharp through heavy outdoor use
- Semi-stainless corrosion behaviour — meaningful protection against rust without requiring constant maintenance
- A steel whose quality is immediately apparent to any experienced blade user who picks this up
At 621 grams this blade carries real authority. The weight is distributed through the full tang into the handle keeping the balance point controlled and the sword manageable despite its considerable size.
Full Tang — Essential at This Scale
On an 18 inch blade carrying 621 grams, full tang construction is not a feature, it is a structural requirement. The D2 steel runs uninterrupted from clip point tip through the steel crossguard, through every rosewood and spacer layer, to the steel pommel cap. One continuous piece of steel from end to end.
Anything less at this scale would be a liability. This is built the way serious large blades have always been built.
The Handle — Rosewood with Steel Spacer Rings
The handle on this hunting sword is constructed from alternating rosewood sections and thin steel spacer rings stacked and compressed onto the full tang to create a ribbed, textured grip pattern that provides exceptional purchase along the full 5 inch handle length.
The alternating warm rosewood and bright steel rings create a visually striking handle that suits the scale and character of the blade. The natural variation in rosewood grain means every handle is subtly unique — no two look exactly alike.
The steel crossguard provides full hand protection and gives the hunting sword a commanding, classical large blade profile. The steel pommel cap completes the full tang and adds rearward balance weight that helps manage the forward mass of the 18 inch blade.
Perfect For
Large game hunting and field processing, camp use, brush clearing, bushcraft, outdoor survival, and serious large blade collecting. An exceptional centrepiece gift for hunters, sword collectors, large blade enthusiasts, and anyone who wants a handmade piece that commands a room.
