What is D2 Steel?
D2 steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel widely used in quality knives. It offers excellent wear resistance and strong edge retention, holding a sharp edge through tough cutting tasks. With about 1.5% carbon and 11-13% chromium, it provides semi-stainless properties—better corrosion resistance than basic carbon steels, though not fully stainless. D2 knives are hardened to around 58-62 HRC, making them durable for everyday carry (EDC), hunting, or utility work. They require basic care (wipe dry after use) but deliver great performance at an affordable price compared to premium steels.

What is a Hunting Skinner Knife?
A hunting skinner knife is a specialized fixed-blade knife designed specifically for skinning and field-dressing game animals. It features a short, wide, curved blade with a pronounced belly that allows for precise, controlled slicing to separate hide from meat efficiently without damaging the pelt or wasting meat.

Key Features:

  • Curved Blade Design — Optimized for skinning strokes and detailed work around joints and tendons.
  • D2 Steel or Damascus Blade — Our versions use high-performance D2 steel for excellent edge retention and wear resistance.
  • Full Tang Construction — Ensures superior strength, balance, and durability during field use.
  • Ergonomic Handle — Available in comfortable materials such as rosewood with decorative wood spacers for a secure grip even when hands are wet or bloody.

A good hunting skinner is an essential tool for hunters, combining precision, strength, and ease of use. It excels at caping, skinning, and light butchering tasks.
Our handmade hunting skinner knives deliver professional-level performance for both novice and experienced hunters.

How to Preserve a D2 Blade for Long-Lasting Performance?
D2 steel is a high-performing tool steel with excellent edge retention, but it is semi-stainless and requires proper care to prevent rust and maintain its sharpness over many years.

Best Practices to Preserve Your D2 Blade:

  • Clean and Dry Immediately After every use, wipe the blade thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth. Remove all moisture, blood, acids, or residues right away.
  • Apply Protective Oil Regularly apply a thin layer of knife oil, mineral oil, or a rust-preventive product (such as Tuf-Glide or Ballistol). This is the most important step for long-term preservation.
  • Avoid Prolonged Moisture  Never store the knife wet. Avoid dishwashers and long exposure to water, salt, or humid environments.
  • Proper Storage Keep the knife in a dry place. Use a quality sheath provided with the knife.
  • Regular Maintenance Lightly oil the blade every few weeks even if not in use. Check for any spots and clean them promptly.
  • Sharpening Maintain the edge with a whetstone or diamond sharpener (15–20° angle). Avoid letting the edge become too dull, as excessive sharpening removes more metal.

With consistent care, your D2 blade will remain rust-free, sharp, and reliable for decades. Proper preservation ensures you get maximum value from this high-wear-resistant steel.
